Body Pain & Trauma

Consult with your healthcare provider before self treating any type of pain or injury.

Swelling/Bruises: Wrapping an ice pack in a paper towel or washcloth and applying it to the site of injury for 15-20 minutes once every 2 hours can help to relieve pain.

Muscle spasm pain: Massages, and application of heat for 20-30 minutes every 2 hours can help treat muscle spasm pain.

All pain: Listening to music, mindful meditation or breathing exercises (see diet and lifestyle section), acupuncture, and creative art therapies can help to relieve pain.

Cuts and Scrapes: If your cut is over 1/4 inch long, bleeding excessively, or bleeding for more than 10 minutes it is important that you contact a healthcare provider. To treat a cut, first wash your hands, and then begin to wash the cut or scrape with regular soap and water. Remove all particles and dirt form the wound, it is okay to rinse some tweezers in rubbing alcohol and then use them to remove particles. Elevating the wound and applying pressure with a clean washcloth can help to stop bleeding. Once the wound is clean, apply an antibiotic ointment such as neosporin, and cover with a gauze pad or bandaid.

Over the counter medications such as ibuprofen(Advil), acetaminophen(Tylenol), and naproxen(Aleve) are effective in relieving pain.
