Constipation

If you are under 18, have been using a laxative for 7 days with no relief, have abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, or other medical conditions or symptoms, it is particularly important that you contact your healthcare provider.

The following can help treat constipation:

  • Gradually increasing insoluble fiber intake to 25 grams per day for women, or 38 grams per day for men along with staying well hydrated. It is important to stay well hydrated if you are increasing your fiber intake to treat constipation. Insoluble fiber sources include whole grains(bread, cereal, rice, and oats), fruits and vegetables.

  • Maintaining a balanced diet(see lifestyle section).

  • Exercising regularly (light aerobic exercise).

  • Prunes and prune juice contain a natural laxative called sorbitol which can treat constipation. Initial treatment options for constipation include stool softeners, glycerin suppositories, and fiber products such as metamucil.

  • Avoiding causes of constipation. Some causes of constipation include iron, antacids that contain calcium or aluminum, certain narcotic pain killers, alcohol, caffeine, dehydration, anticonvulsants, antidepressants, antacids, and other medications.
