Cough + Headache

If you are under 18, have severe head pain, if your headache has persisted for more then 10 days, if you have any other accompanying symptoms, if you are pregnant or have any other medical conditions, if you have a fever, chest pain, or shortness of breath, it is particularly important that you contact your healthcare provider.

Quitting smoking, staying well hydrated, use of a humidifier, and avoiding inhaled irritants can help relieve a cough.

If you are taking a prescribed ACE inhibitor such as lisinopril, it is important that you notify your doctor of your cough. Your doctor may recommend discontinuation of the drug.

Reducing stress through methods such as meditation or resting(see lifestyle tab), along with avoiding bright lights, staying hydrated, maintaining a healthy diet, stretching the muscles in the back of the neck, massages, and placing a cool washcloth on the back of your neck or forehead can help treat headaches.

When treating cough and cold symptoms it is important not to use products with unnecessary active ingredients. For cough and headache, try to use products containing a cough suppressant such as dextromethophan(for a dry cough), or an expectorant such as gauifenesin(for a cough with mucous production). The product should also include a pain reliever such as acetaminophen, ibuprofen, or naproxen.
