Dry Cough (Sore Throat)

If you are under 18, if your cough has persisted for more than 2 weeks, if you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, a fever over 101.5 F, or any other symptoms, it is particularly important that you contact your health care provider.

The following can help treat a dry cough:

  • Quitting smoking

  • Using a humidifier

  • Consuming tea or soup

  • Cough suppressant products that contain dextromethorphan are often recommended to decrease the frequency and severity of the cough.

If you are taking a prescribed ACE inhibitor such as lisinopril, it is important that you notify your doctor of your cough. Your doctor may recommend discontinuation of the drug.
