Fever

If you are under 18, if your fever is over 101.5 F, if you suspect an infection, or if you have any other accompanying symptoms it is particularly important that you contact your healthcare provider.

Fevers are not typically treated unless the temperature is over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit because a low grade fever can help your body to fight infection.

Keeping the room cool, dressing lightly, staying hydrated, keeping activity to a minimum, applying a cold washcloth to the forehead, and sponging can help treat fever.

Sponging: Sit in a bath of about 1-5 inches of tepid water(85-90 degrees F). Use a washcloth to spread water over the arms, legs, and upper body.

A fever is an increase in body temperature in response to an infection or foreign substance and is part of the body's natural defense mechanism against infections. Causes of a fever include infections from bacteria, viruses and fungi. Medications and diseases that suppress the immune system can also cause a fever.
